February 2007 Meeting With Becky Le Page
Before I start with the Recap of the February meeting I would like to tell you
a little about Helen Hu who will be talking about the different kinds of
Chinese Medicines that are not spoken of here in the US.  She was raised in
a traditional, cultured, educated family in Beijing City of China where Helen
Hu began the study of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) earlier when she
was a middle school student. She went on to study Western Medicine in
Hebei Medical School in order to integrate the two medicines and advance
her medical health procedures.

Subsequently, she formally studied Chinese Traditional Medicine graduating
with a degree in Oriental Medicine and successfully passing both the
National and State of California Boards as a licensed acupuncturist.

Ms. Hu maintains a practice at San Diego Longevity in San Diego, California
where she sees patients for a variety of health conditions. San Diego
Longevity offers Longevity Spa Medica; one of the only centers in the United
States to integrate Traditional Chinese Medicine into spa treatments to
promote longevity, fight chronic illness, and reduce stress and pain.

February 3, 2007 Meeting with Becky Le Page who had Atypical TN
Recap by:  Cherie Sato, SGL

Becky started off with talking about the picture of the Trigeminal nerve that
covers the face and said that she looked at it a lot.  This is her story and
that she does not have TN anymore.  She does have 85-90% of her health
back from the chronic pain threw Becky into fatigue, all over her body pain,
not just the facial pain.  It was so debilitating and fatigued that she just went
down.

After talking with me we thought that maybe Becky had Atypical Facial pain.
No one could help her and no one could help her in the medical community
except that it was TN, other than that it was TN.

It all started with lots of stress.  Becky was teaching at the high school level
with kids that were emotional disturbed children, a single mother, doing the
work of 5 people and my body was going down for the count.  Becky got an
abscessed tooth.  When you get over stressed your body gets over acidic.
Her 14 karat gold rings were turning black with all the stress that was going
on in her life.

Becky went into the dentist and drilled where there are not supposed to be
any nerves according to the dentist.  He put a whole in her jawbone about
the size of her little finger and went in to take off the root of the abscessed
tooth because she had a beautiful bridge and he didn’t want to ruin this.

He was in a hurry and did a surgery that should have taken 90 minutes and
did it in 10 minutes.  Becky begged him to do the procedure because the
pain was so severe.  The dentist left the room and came back a few minutes
later and said that all went well and her stomach got all tensed up.
Something didn’t sit right with Becky after he told her this.  After the
Novocain wore off she knew why.  The pain was very intense and she had
never felt pain like that before.  No painkillers would take it away, and she
used hot water bottles to help to get rid of the pain.  Becky couldn’t sleep at
night.  This all happened in April of 1996.

There was itching, it was ice cold and there was no flow of energy on that
side of her head after what the dentist had done.  By early June it had
become severe pain, constant pain that would never leave.  Becky did the
same thing that most of us do, going from one doctor to another to find out
what was wrong with her.  Trying so hard to find an answer.  She had terrible
pain in her inner ear and went to the emergency room and there was
nothing wrong with her ear.

She has had 8 teeth pulled wishing, hoping, and praying that something
would take the pain away.  She was told by dentists that she had TMJ, which
she does not have.  Becky’s frantic answer to her questions was not
happening.  A neurologist wrote down in a report that what the dentist did
had nothing to do with her TN that she had.  Becky went to another
neurologist in Boston and was told that the dentist had done permanent
nerve damage and that she will never get it in writing.  Sorry that you can’t
teach anymore, sorry that your life is you, the pain and the world.  There
was this huge veil in front of her life.

At the Boston Pain Clinic the doctor told her that when it comes to TN the
most people that he sees are teachers and nurses.  Becky does believe that
her pain was due to a lot of stress because of her life at the time and her job.

So Becky had to figure out what to do since medication was not the answer
for her.  She started with Yoga and does this every day for the past 8 years
and for the first 5 years she didn’t feel much difference since there was so
much fatigue and stress in her body. Becky had no energy because she was
fighting so much pain.  One of the things that she was told to do were these
up side down posses where you bend over and get the blood rushing to the
head.  Becky is talking about Atypical TN and doesn’t know anything about
TN.   Becky never knew if there was an artery compressing against the
nerve and she didn’t know why all the pain was happening.

Then Becky started to investigate.  She didn’t know that she was acidic.  So I
started to watch what she was eating.  That she wasn’t eating acidic foods
and she had to completely change her life.  NO STRESS was to be in her
life.  Which for her she had to give it up to God.  Bills were coming in; you
can’t work anymore, you can’t teach anymore, and Becky had to learn how
to just be.  Not feel like she had to do everything and be everything, but to
just be. Fifteen years ago if she had been late for something she would
stress about it but not anymore.  Becky was late for the meeting but it was
OK.  She has learned to be very gentle with herself and not panic over
everything.  Especially with the pain because she would be irritable,
depressed, etc.

Becky’s face pain left after about 5 years.  It doesn’t mean that my health
totally came back.  She’s on Tegretol and this is probably why she is well
today.  It took a couple of years to get Tegretol but with some fighting for it
for 2 years, Becky got the medication that she needed.  While Becky was in
her fight against pain she met another teacher who was given Prozac and it
healed it.

Some of the things that she learned along the way….She turned to
alternative healing.  Becky is a Reiki Master (this is holistic).  A lady had
done some Energy work on Becky and it was amazing enough that she
wanted to learn more about it and started doing it on her self.  She does a
lot of Energy work.  Becky explained that you have a physical body, an
emotional body, and she found out that there had been a lot of physical and
emotional trauma in her childhood.   And what she did instead of letting it
out, she held it in.  So, what would happen when Becky did the Energy work
it would bring that up.  She would grieve, rage, etc. and then she would start
feeling better.  The therapeutic work that they do in the hospital, they do the
same thing.

You have to know a power greater than you and everyone has a different
Religion.  So, this may not be for everyone.  I do know that people who are
in pain will try and do anything to help them selves.  And people over the
years of TN being around have done some pretty weird and strange things
that most of wouldn’t even try.  There was a list of things that people tried
way back in time to get rid of the TN pain that I would never do.

I myself know that when you have massages on a regular basis that same
type of thing can happen for example people can start crying during a
massage and they don’t know why.  But as time goes on and with more
massages, it comes out what is being held in the body.

Becky feels that the trauma from her childhood and her wanting for
perfection, she would put the weight of the world on her shoulders and this is
what caused her pain.  And healing that was very huge for her.  You don’t
get ill over night and you don’t heal overnight.  This is a process for Becky.
She got ill in 1994 and it took a long time for the healing and a lot of work
that she has now.

Becky attributes her healing from Atypical TN from holistic healing.  Below is
Becky’s approach to Chronic Pain from her perspective.  Before this she had
gone to all the doctors just like most of us do before Becky found a way to
heal herself.

One thing that I would like to add here first is that TN is totally different than
Atypical TN pain.  As we all know, with TN there is an artery looped or laying
in the Trigeminal Nerve and Atypical pain is a constant burning pain that
doesn’t go away.  They do not have electrical shocks as the TN people do.
Breaking the Pain Cycle
Find a technique that work to reduce the pain.  For some only the
medication will work for treating the pain and depression and Becky uses
Yoga.  Persistence and dedication to lifestyle changes—Stress reduction in
all fazes of your life (easy to say but not always easy to do), meditation and
visualization, yoga, Tai Chi, etc., hot and cold baths, self-massage,
acupressure, aroma therapy (you can look up on the Internet for aroma
therapy for calming).

Spiritual Strength – listening to the inner self, the voice of self-healing.  Gifts
that Becky received from the suffering were gratitude, compassion,
understanding, taking better care of your self, simplifying of one’s life,
finding value.

Diet – easily digestible and highly nutritious foods, alkalizing diet, ayurvedic
(the ancient Hindu art of medicine and have prolonging life).  Tips to improve
digestion, including body-typing diet (http://quiz.ivillage.
com/diet/tests/bodytype.htm) herbs to build strength, nourish cells, cleanse
toxic waste and calming.

Alternative healers – mental health professionals, acupuncturist,
chiropractors (NUCCA which I myself have found to be the best), breath
workers, cranial sacral therapist, (Becky stated that this started up her TN
pain) physical therapy, reflexologist (foot massage), Reiki (healing energy
through hands), polarity therapist (Polarity Therapy is a very effective form
of treatment which is much sought after in this age of holistic and
complementary approaches to ill health).

Color therapy (The history of color has its roots in ancient Egypt, and
although I have run across some scattered references throughout the
Internet of color therapy having a connection with Atlantean teachings, I
don't have any documentation to back that up as factual. Color therapy, also
known as chromo therapy, is often facilitated in the healing rooms of
alternative health practitioners. A therapist trained in color therapy uses
color to balance energy wherever our bodies are lacking, be it physical,
emotional, spiritual, or mental.

Some of the tools used in color therapy are gemstones, candles, wands,
prisms, colored fabrics, bath treatments, and colored eye wear), herbologist,
homeopathy, massage therapist (increase of circulation and release of toxic
waste).  One thing that I know abut massage therapy is that you have to
drink a lot of water after a massage to flush out the toxins.  And last,
iridology (study of the eye).

Tips to improve Digestion/Ayurvedic Principles

Once a week liquefy the diet, fruit juices and vegetable juices are best, but
any food liquefied is allowed.  This will give your digestive tract a rest and so
improve your digestion when you begin eating again.  Liquefy on a day when
you do not have a lot planned and you can rest.

Sip hot water throughout the day.  This will help to remove impurities from
your body and digestive tract.  If necessary, carry a hot thermos with you.
Always eat in an atmosphere that is settled (peaceful).  Eat only if you are
hungry.  Always be seated when eating.  Don’t talk while you chew your
food.  Eat at a moderate speed.  Do not eat too fast or too slow.  Sip warm
water with your meals.  Sit quietly for five minutes after each meal.  Minimize
raw foods; cooked food is easier to digest.

Leave one quarter of your stomach empty to aid digestion.  Drink milk
separately from meals.  You may have something sweet with it.  Do not eat if
you are upset.  Never cook with honey.  Always eat freshly cooked meals.

Avoid ice-cold foods and drinks.  This is believed to shut down the digestive
process.  Try to include the six different tastes at each mean.  The taste are
sweet, sour, salty, pungent, astringent and bitter and preferably in that
order.  For more information on what foods contain these tastes consult a
book on Ayurvedic diet.

Wait until one meal is digested before eating another, usually between four
to six hours for a large meal, and two to four for a small meal.  Do not eat in
between meals.  Eat at the same time every day.

I would like to add my own thoughts on the above statement.  I have been
told to eat 4-6 times a day and that they be very small amounts of food.
This is good for you system.  We all have different ideas, different things
that work for us.

Eat your largest meal at lunchtime.  Digestive fires burn most appropriately
between 10 o’clock to two o’clock daily.  I totally agree with this statement.  I
lost weight doing this but not everyone can do this.

Make sure that you eat morning afternoon and evening.  The most important
meal is breakfast.  Eat moderate portions, two handfuls is most appropriate.

“Note:  These tips are taken from the book “Perfect Health”. By Deepak
Chopra and follow Ayurvedic principles.  Ayurvedic medicine believes that
milk is one of the most valued nutrients in the diet.  They believe if you have
trouble digesting it you should boil it first.  For more information buy the
book.”

Becky feels that her biggest problem was stress and now she is out of pain
eats what she wants to, healthy of course.  But she keeps the stress out.  It
took years for her to learn how to do this.  Especially in this world today of
rush, rush, rush, Becky had to learn to slow down.

Please remember that we are talking about Atypical TN here and not TN
where there is an artery or vein touching and looping around the nerve.
That is NOT caused by stress.

                      Season of Illness

There are some who must endure
that which others feel is not endurable.
            Your illness and your pain
            are clearly difficult.
Illness can bring forth feelings of
            hopelessness and anger.
It can rack your should with grief,
But to walk steadfast through the pain,
to feel all the emotions that surface,
And to hold a burning candle
            in the mind’s eye
            a candle of faith,
The ability of the body to heal
Or the acceptance that it may not,
this is courage of the truest form.
            You are courageous warrior,
            And you are loved.

Here is one other Poem that Becky read and I said that I would put it in the
Newsletter.  It’s by: Williamson Marianne, Prayers for the body.

Dear God,
Please awaken me from this dream.  I fear and I choose not to, I suffer and I
choose not to.  I claim for myself your resurrection within me, my perfect
health, my perfect self in whom there is no pain or fear.  Every cell of my
being is radiant with my love for you.  May my earthly self align with this, may
my human heart stop beating so wildly.  May I remember, dear God, that I
live in your mind and I belong in your arms.  For there I am healed and there
I am whole.  You are in my divine physician.  You know my terror, although it
is not real.  You understand my pain, although it is not understandable.  You
answer with your spirit.  Dear Lord, please heal me.  I surrender this as I
surrender all things I trust in you in this and all things I need you, Lord, in
this and all things.  Please Dear God. Amen.

I would like to tell you about a couple of people who have just had surgery
by Dr. Alksne and they are doing great.  Dee Kosta had her surgery wasn’t
able to make the January meeting and came to the February meeting and
looks and feels great.

Helen from Portland, OR who comes down here for about 6 months had her
surgery with Dr. Alksne just before Christmas and she is doing OK.

Barbara Tremmel who had her surgery about 8 months ago I think is off her
medications now.  I bugged her to go see Dr. Alksne for months and she is
very happy that she finally did go.  Dr. Alksne found a loop on both sides but
only has pain on the right side.  Dr. Alksne did nothing about the left side
since Barbara has no pain.  This shows you how much it is a mystery to the
doctors when there can be a loop with no pain your whole life.  They don’t
understand it.

Shirley, who I have not met yet, has been calling and talking with me for a
few months now.  I finally convinced her to go see Dr. Alksne and he did
surgery on her just this month.  Shirley’s friends ask her why she is going in
for this big surgery when it looks like there is nothing wrong with her.  I
invited her to bring any family and friends to our meeting to that they might
understand a little bit more about TN and what Shirley is going through.

This is why so many people feel like they are alone in this world with this
horrific pain and they thing that they have nowhere to turn to.  I don’t
remember who gave Shirley my number, but I was so happy to talk with her
and to let her know that she is not alone.  I hope that Shirley will come down
to our meeting sometime soon so that we all can meet her.  I think she lives
around the LA area.
